Monte Cristo history.

This sandwich has a mysterious history. Many believe it started with the French Croque Monsieur, a grilled cheese sandwich with Gruyere and ham. The French Croque has a rue with cheese as a topping. Later It was adapted in various recipes in the 1930s and 1940s.

Find a good ham, or use leftover deli slices for your sandwich.

Dijon mustard has a wonderful flavor which uses white wine to add depth.
